History
The "hermit" refers to Louis D. Boucher, a French Canadian prospector who arrived at the Grand Canyon in 1891 and operated a copper mine and tourist camp. He lived alone in the canyon for twenty years.
The structure at Hermits Rest was designed by the architect Mary Jane Colter and built in 1914. Much like the Desert View Watchtower, Hopi House and Lookout Studio, Hermits Rest was designed so that it gave the appearance of emerging from the landscape versus marring the grandeur and natural scenery of the canyon.
