Continue straight ahead on Village Loop past two motel-type buildings, and pull in to the driveway in front of the Bright Angel Lodge. If you are unable to find parking in the small lot, you can turn right at the bottom of the parking lot, and find parking behind the Bright Angel Cabins. It will be a short and beautiful walk along the rim to come back to the Lodge and Gift Shop.

Description

The Bright Angel Gift Shop is conveniently located just off the lobby of the Bright Angel Lodge, and next to its restaurant and lounge. It’s a very busy store, from which many visitors get their first glimpse of the Grand Canyon. You may be fortunate enough to see the breathtaking California Condors that frequent this area seasonally, and the view of the canyon just behind the gift shop is spectacular.

The theme of this store reflects its proximity to the rim of the Grand Canyon, and features a large section accommodating the needs of the many hikers and mule riders who use the nearby Bright Angel Trail. There, you will find hiking sticks, backpacks, water bottles, hats, shirts, hiking snacks and water. In addition, many souvenir items are sold here, as well as camera supplies, t-shirts and caps, Native American handcrafts, matted photographs and many unique gifts that are made in the USA. There are also a children’s section, and a media area selling postcards, CDs, books and DVDs about the Canyon. A video of the Grand Canyon shows continuously on a wide screen monitor. Look for our selection of eco-friendly products where you may find items made from corn, organic cotton and recycled materials. Re-usable water bottles and shopping bags are also sold here. Bring in your used batteries, and we’ll make sure that they are recycled.

All Xanterra stores at the South Rim are longtime members of the Indian Arts and Crafts Association, promoting authentic Native American creations. You can be assured that you are purchasing authentic Native American arts and handcrafts in our stores.

Across the lobby from the gift shop is the History Room, featuring an additional selection of books and maps about Grand Canyon and the Southwest.

History

In the mid-1930’s, encouraged by park Superintendent Tillotson, a wide-ranging clean-up and improvement of Grand Canyon Village was undertaken. In conjunction with this effort, the Santa Fe Railroad had architect Mary Colter draw up plans for a new Bright Angel Lodge that would include new guest cabins, a restaurant, lounge, and curio shop. Since its grand opening on June 22nd, 1935 the Bright Angel has been a favorite with our visitors, while serving as an entryway for millions and their first view of the Grand Canyon.

One notable feature at the new Bright Angel Lodge was (and remains) the Geologic Fireplace located in what was then the lounge (today’s History Room). Colter, with the assistance of then Chief Naturalist Edwin McKee, created a fireplace in the general shape of Zoroaster Temple which contained rock from every major stratum found from river to rim along the Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails.
