Calendar of Special EventsWelcome to the Grand Canyon South Rim's Calendar of Events Page. Endangered Species and Wildlife DaysThe Grand Canyon National Park will be hosting a variety of events Friday May 18 - Sunday May 20 to commemorate these two special days. On Friday and Saturday at the Grand Canyon Visitors Center specialists will be on hand giving lectures and there will be special exhibits, childrens activities and live animal demonstrations from 10am to 5pm. On Sunday visitors to the park will be able to view (weather permitting) a full eclipse of the sun. Ranger-assisted opportunities to view the eclipse will be on hand. Also NASA scientists will share their telescopes for views of the eclipse and the night sky afterward. Approximate Timing of the eclipse 5:28pm - partial eclipse begins 6:34pm - annular eclipse begins 6:39pm - annular eclipse ends 7:32pm - sun sets while still partially eclipsed American Indian DancersA troupe of American Indian dancers at Grand Canyon National Park will perform authentic dances traditionally performed at pow wows. The free performances will be staged outside Hopi House- a historic gift shop that resembles Hopi dwellings from the Southwest – on selected dates now through September. The dances will be performed by the Pollen Trail Dancers, an acclaimed Navajo troupe. Dances include story-telling performances such as the Bow & Arrow Dance, which tells the story of Navajo hunting days; traditional dances like the Basket Dance, which demonstrates the importance of baskets and basket-weaving in Navajo life; and lively and fast-paced Hoop Dances. On performance days, dancers will begin at 1 and 2:15, and each show will last 45 minutes.
