Gifts & Souvenirs

No single person has received more recognition for making the American Southwest a hospitable area for travelers than Fred Harvey. Since 1876, the Fred Harvey Company has played a prominent role in creating the image of the Southwest -- images that endure today as the Fred Harvey Trading Company.

In shaping the experience of the traveling guest, the Fred Harvey Company sought to promote Native American arts and crafts. Thus was born the Fred Harvey Indian Department, which helped to popularize Native American handicrafts.

The two centers for this new venture were the Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque, now gone, and Grand Canyon's Hopi House, still in existence and one of the several distinctive buildings at the Grand Canyon designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter. We invite you to share in the history of the Fred Harvey legacy of making memories.

Hopi House

When you enter the Hopi House, you'll witness the architecture native to Hopi dwellings of this area: ceilings made with layers of saplings and timbers, adobe walls and corner fireplaces.

Designed by Mary E. J. Colter for Native American artisans to demonstrate and sell their crafts, it became known as the first gift store at the Grand Canyon.

Today, The Hopi House still represents the finest in certified Native American artistry. The second floor gallery features Native American artwork.

El Tovar Gift Shop

El Tovar was considered the most elegant hotel west of the Mississippi when it opened in 1905.

You'll find this rustic, historic building to be just as comfortable and charming now as it was in the past. Enjoy the elegance of original artwork and one-of-a-kind Native American jewelry. Relive the bygone era of trains and Harvey Girls at the El Tovar Gift Shop, located in the El Tovar Hotel. Open year-round. Offering exclusive clothing, Native American jewelry, pottery and collectibles.

Bright Angel Gift Shop

If you think the view from Bright Angel Lodge looks familiar, you're right.

The lodge was built to reflect the geology of the surrounding canyon. The interior of the lodge was constructed of stones common to this Southwest landscape. Learn about the Fred Harvey Company by browsing through the history room that features the geological fireplace designed by Mary E. J. Colter.

Gift shop features t-shirts, music, pottery and more. History Room features Harvey Girls era memorabilia and a one-of-a-kind fireplace.

Lookout Studio

Lookout Studio was designed by Mary E. J. Colter to fit into the natural setting of the Canyon. Perched on the rim since 1914, the telescopes on the porch of Lookout Studio have provided visitors, both past and present, with an up-close view of this natural wonder. As in the past, you may purchase Grand Canyon photographs and other art-related items as you take in the inspirational view. Also features rocks, fossils, jewelry, t-shirts and hats.

Hermits Rest

This historic landmark, also designed by Mary E. J. Colter, was built in 1914 to blend naturally into the Canyon's beautiful landscape.

Hermits Rest, located at the head of Hermit Trail, was a stagecoach rest stop for the "Indian Detours" of the Fred Harvey Company in the early 1900s. Today, visitors journey the eight miles to Hermits Rest to hike or relax at the hearth of the room-encompassing fireplace. You may purchase an eclectic blend of Native American crafts and gifts.

Desert View Watchtower

Desert View Watchtower is a not-to-be-missed gathering place and rest stop located at the east entrance to the park. It's another historical Mary E. J. Colter-designed building, constructed 1932.

View the original artwork by Fred Kabotie on your ascent to the top of the tower. The Watchtower offers spectacular views of the nearby Painted Desert and Colorado Plateau. Native American and park-related merchandise are featured at the Desert View Watchtower & Trading Post.
