UPDATE - Grand Canyon National Park Update: Flash Flooding and Temporary Lodging Impacts

Following flash flooding in the inner canyon on August 29, water infrastructure serving the South Rim sustained damage, and Grand Canyon National Park remains under Stage 4 water restrictions. Under these restrictions, our in-park lodges are unable to accommodate overnight guests.

Lodging closures have been extended through September 13, 2026. Guests with existing overnight reservations at Bright Angel Lodge, Kachina Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Thunderbird Lodge, and El Tovar Hotel arriving on or before September 13 have been contacted by email. Affected reservations have been automatically canceled, with deposit refunds issued within 7 to 10 business days. Guests whose stays extend beyond September 13 will have their arrival date adjusted to September 14 for the remainder of their stay.

Reservations arriving September 14 and later are currently proceeding as planned. We are monitoring conditions closely and will contact affected guests directly if anything changes.

The park remains open to day visitors. Restaurants, activities, and day services on the South Rim are operating as normal. The flooding occurred inside the canyon and did not impact roads within or to and from the South Rim.

Phantom Ranch is closed until further notice, including the canteen and all overnight lodging, with reservations canceled through at least September 20, 2026. The North Kaibab Trail and the river bridges are closed, making Phantom Ranch inaccessible.

Grand Canyon National Park Update: Flash Flooding and Temporary Lodging Impacts

A significant flash flood occurred in the inner canyon on August 29, 2026. All Grand Canyon South Rim Lodges guests and employees are safe and accounted for.

Due to flash-flood damage to water infrastructure serving the South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park is entering Stage 4 water restrictions effective Monday, August 31. As a result, our South Rim lodges are unable to accommodate overnight guests at this point through September 6, 2026. This includes Bright Angel Lodge, Kachina Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Thunderbird Lodge and El Tovar Hotel. Guest with existing reservations have been notified via email with additional information. If you have a reservation with us inside the Park from August 31 to September 6, 2026 and did not receive the email, please reach out to us for assistance. You may chat with our representative via web chat or by phone at 888-29PARKS (297-2757). Please be advised that hold times may be long due to high call volumes. Our reservations office is open daily 7:00am to 7:00pm MT.

Day visitors are still welcome to visit the park, and all park services remain available with minimal impact.

Phantom Ranch: Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins, and the entire North Kaibab Trail are closed until further notice. The Black Bridge and Silver Bridge crossing the Colorado River are also closed. Phantom Ranch reservations are being canceled through at least September 13.

Maswik North — Planned Improvements During Your Stay

Through September 20, 2026, we are refreshing the exterior of the Maswik North lodge buildings. Work is scheduled from 8am to 5pm, primarily Monday through Friday and occasionally on weekends. You will see crews and equipment around the lodge area during the day, and some ice machines may be temporarily unavailable while work is underway. Guest rooms remain open throughout. El Tovar Guest Rooms — Planned Improvements During Your Stay

Through September 12, 2026, we are refreshing the guest rooms at El Tovar, and portions of the hotel will not be bookable during this time. North Wing guest rooms will be offline from July 5 to August 8, and South Wing guest rooms will be offline from July 31 to September 11. The El Tovar Dining Room and retail outlets will remain open throughout. Construction work will occur daily during daytime hours, and while we are doing everything we can to minimize the impact to your stay, we appreciate your understanding for any disruptions that may occur. Grand Canyon North Rim

The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park has reopened to the public with all paved roads—including Highway 67, Cape Royal, and Point Imperial Roads—accessible for scenic drives to popular viewpoints like Point Imperial and Cape Royal. The North Kaibab Trail will also reopen for hiking (foot traffic only), though visitors should expect possible delays or temporary closures due to ongoing maintenance, post-fire conditions, and weather. Cottonwood Campground will be available for overnight stays, and most backcountry areas will be open, while the North Rim Campground will reopen later in the season as conditions allow. Please note that lodging will not be available within the park on the North Rim in 2026, but fuel, food, and water are available at the North Rim Country Store and Jacob Lake.
